A Body of Spirals - 6 Hours

The Innermost Connections of Efficient and Easeful Movement

This workshop is about what connects us; what connects us front to back, side to side, top to bottom, inside out and how the spiral

Spirals. Diagonals. Lines of movement. Boney rhythms. Contractile fields. The infinite connectedness of tissue, sensation and organization; the heart of the balance between ease and effort, which affords us a new and potentially more powerful perspective on teaching movement.

A 6-hour workshop exploring the beautiful dynamics of spiral movement within the body and how our teaching might be taken to a new level with the spiral at its heart.

Guiding Premise:

By understanding and promoting the body’s small (subtle or micro movements) and large (gross or macro movements) spirals we can more effectively promote whole-body function and balanced integration of healthy movement patterns.

We will look at how understanding the spirals of the body, of movement, both in the soft tissue and the bones, is about smoothing out the edges, providing an opportunity for flow and seamlessness as well as promoting the wholeness of the body. Joseph Pilates’ ultimate objective was Uniform Development. Developing the body uniformly demands as much harmony within the system as possible. Understanding and using the spirals makes this much more possible and exponentially more functional.

Our beginning and end point will be to assess and reassess the body from its most primal perspective via walking and squatting. Every tool you’ll learn in this course will strive to improve these two movements using Pilates and other methods.

Primary Goals:

  1. To articulate and integrate new information about fascia, fascial oriented training, contractile fields and other emerging models of how the body moves as a whole into our current knowledge of the body and the Pilates Method so that our work can take on an even more profound role in healing and empowering people.

  2. To discover ways to apply emerging models to our current practice via shifting perspective on familiar tools and acquiring new tools.

  3. To improve functional movement and whole-body integration via the spiral.

Assertions:

  1. Improved spiral mechanics at pivotal joints will improve the overall uniform development and functional patterns of the whole system.

  2. Optimizing the spiral both on a micro and macro level will improve communication via all the tissue systems.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand crucial functional spirals of the body both in the tissue and in the bones via:

  • Bony rhythms of major joints:
    • Feet and ankles
    • Knees and hips
    • Pelvis/sacrum and lumbar spine
    • Thoracic spine and rib cage
    • Shoulder girdle and neck
    • Contractile fields and fascial lines of force
    • Muscular slings of support
  1. Understand how health in each of the areas listed above can affect positive change in common movement and alignment patterns.

    • Explore common postural patterns and how improving spirals can improve functional movement like gait and squatting.

  2. Identify Pilates exercises that are most useful in restoring the spirals to promote overall system health, Uniform Development, efficiency, and adaptability.

The Cueing Lab - 6.5 Hours

A Hands-on Exploration of Manual and Verbal Cueing

The Cueing Lab is an in-depth study of how to build powerful touch and language skills into your teaching for greater student and teacher success! A continuation of The Manual Cueing Series.

In this 6.5 hour course we will learn the different types of verbal and manual cues and what they actually do and DO NOT do for our students, the most skillful approaches to using each kind of cue and the best time to use them.

We will consider how to enhance students’ learning styles, how to leverage cueing to support the very powerful Student Centered Teaching approach, and look at real-life scenarios and case studies. Teachers can also expect to actively practice the cues through a specific feedback loop, which will reinforce the efficacy or lack thereof of each cue so they are better prepared for taking them immediately into their teaching.

This is an interactive online workshop that will expose you to powerful verbal and hands-on cueing techniques you can easily and immediately apply to your Pilates teaching. More than that, however, the course will give you an opportunity to explore how to improve your teaching, accentuate your strengths and experience different ways of making a greater impact on your students in every session.

In the Cueing Lab you will get to watch real teachers go through a dynamic and fun process of examining their touch and their language skills, play with new skills, and strategies with clarity a direction for their teaching AND you’ll be able to do this with them!

Anatomy That Sticks - 12 Hours

Functional & Experiential Study of The Body

I LOVE anatomy. I’m a self-professed, and frequently accused, anatomy geek.

Not only that, but what drives me to study and learn and then teach anatomy is that I want to know WHY the body does what it does, or at least what it has the potential to do in any given situation.

In this online course you get the exact same information as in my live 14-hour course, which I’ve been adapting and exploring for more than six years now. This course gets nothing but rave reviews from live participants. Time and time again, students have asked me to put the course online and I’m finally able to do it.

I know you are going to love this course no matter if you’ve been teaching for 20 years or you are just getting started.

Like I recently told a student of mine: You can never get enough anatomy because you learn it in layers. What ever is meant to land, whatever you are ready to “hear”, is what you take away. Everything else gets “stored” for later.

Revisit anatomy, get re-inspired by it, dive deeper into the aspects of connective tissue, fascial-oriented training, the anatomy of breath and the movements of the pelvis.

There is nothing like this course to get your juices flowing for the human body 🙂

What you will learn:

  • Gain a basic understanding of the following concepts: healthy range of motion, effortless effort, tension, compression, stability and mobility.
  • Understand the quality and role of muscles, fascia, tendons, and ligaments and their relationship to one another, functional movement and sequencing.
    • Identify the role of fascia in movement and its implications on how we sequence movements for best results.
    • Identify the role Identify the muscles responsible for major actions/movements
    • Identify the difference between movers (agonistic), stabilizers (antagonistic), or synergistic muscles in a movement, exercise or action.
  • Understand the role of the core or inner unit of support (breath, deep back and abdominal muscles, pelvic floor and psoas).
  • Intimately explore the anatomy of breathing
    • The link between breath and healthy function of the whole body.
  • Understand the role of the spine and pelvis in various biomechanical positions.
  • Understand where to initiate a movement in the spine and it’s implications.
    • Gain a deeper knowledge of the role of the thoracic spine in movement.
  • Understand the optimum position of the pelvis in various movements.
  • Explore the anatomy & function of the feet and hands and their relationship to knee & hip health and shoulder health, strength & stability.
  • Put your knowledge into practice through exploration of the specific anatomical function involved in each of the asana families.
  • Put your knowledge into practice through exploration of the specific anatomical function involved in a variety of Pilates exercises.

We will use clay, drawing, movement and Pilates exercises, partner work and other tools that you can work with to optimize your learning and integration of the material.

Seriously, it doesn’t get better than this.

Fearless Extension - 6 Hours

Developing healthy extension in clients with low back & neck pain.

BEE2E4D2-F11C-4516-B0CA-00F4F8C58DCA

Never be afraid to promote and develop spinal extension in students with low back and neck pain again!

Most of us have been taught to “protect” the lower back at all costs. We’ve all gotten supremely good at teaching our students how to engage their lower abdominals to support their lumbar spines, yet we are not getting in there with equal fervor or even attention and teaching them how to use their deep back extensors in conjunction with more complex, challenging movements – movements that ultimately prepare the body for real life, not just sitting, standing, and walking, but the activities that really empower us – hiking, biking, gardening, swimming, playing with our kids or grandkids, skiing, marathoning, dancing, diving, and all the other worthwhile activities that help us feel vital and vibrant, not just like we are getting by.

I realize that reducing pain and increasing range of motion to restore people to their average daily activity is often our number one goal in the beginning…but too often I see teachers getting stuck here.

There are so many missed chances to safely and beautifully get a body to move into that unseen, uncharted, mysterious back body. And we need to be doing it now more than ever.

Most of us still struggle with knowing how, when, and to whom to teach extension. And I’m not just talking about the basics, I’m talking about teaching our students how to fully integrate the spine into the healthiest, fullest range movement patterns their body has the potential to achieve.

When 80% of our students walk through the door with some form of back pain – it can seem like extension is the last place we might want to go.

Our students come in with fear around their back pain, and have sometimes very strong beliefs they are not capable of back bending; the back bending is for younger folks, it’s a thing of the past.

AND I believe that one of our responsibilities as teachers is to discover ways to show our students that they have more potential than they know.

Even if you don’t have hesitations about introducing fundamental extension, I’d further bet that you haven’t been given a clear framework for progressing your students into more integrated forms of extension – you know the kind that light up a body (think rocking swan, breast stroke, standing arm springs arabesque to name a few); the kind that deeply opens the heart and the mind; the kind that most of our students don’t think they are capable of. In fact, maybe you don’t even believe they are capable.

In this workshop you will:

  • Explore, review and relearn pivotal spinal anatomy;
  • Learn a very different way of extending the spine based on changing the apex of the curve, point of initiation, and preparing the different segments of the spine through a variety of alternative movement methods.
  • Learn the steps to take to help students develop healthy local extension as well as gross overall balanced extension of the spine;
  • Learn tools that you can integrate to engage, challenge and motivate your students to LOVE extension.
