The Mentoring Workshop – In Two Parts

May  23rd – Part 1 (10am – 1 pm) &  Part 2 (1pm – 4 pm)

“Clarity & Confidence: Tools For Working With Challenging Students & Difficult Situations.”- Part 1 (10am – 1 pm)

This is one of the most exciting workshops we’ve ever had in the mentoring program because it addressed a topic that is not only TOTALLY OVERLOOKED, but is incredibly imperative to our success as teachers: Conflict resolution.

May2015MentoringFlyer

Ask yourself:

  • Do you have a hard time setting boundaries and then living up to them?
  • Do you find yourself uncomfortable and not knowing what to do when a student is difficult to deal with, combative, or questions your authority?
  • Do you know how to handle dissatisfied students?
  • Do you have tools that you can directly apply to teaching and working in the Pilates studio environment that:
    • would help you more confidently create and maintain crucial boundaries,
    • enforce important policies and protocols (being on time, not having their phones on, being clean, keeping voices low, respecting the 24-hour cancellation policy etc.),
    • address and work with students or other teachers on challenging situations to come to mutually beneficial resolutions?

This workshop will be lead by long time executive leadership coach, and Pilates teacher, Karen Vyner-Brooks. Before the workshop you will be asked to take an online assessment that will provide you with the tools and understanding of how you currently handle conflict, what your tendencies and strengths are and how you can bring greater efficacy and balance to what you already do. The Thomas Kilmann Conflict Mode Inventory is the tool we will be using as well as looking at specific and real-life situations we all face day after day in the Pilates studio.

More About TKI and the process you will go through in the workshop:

The Thomas Kilmann Conflict Mode Inventory, (TKI), provides an opportunity to assess your behavior in conflict situations. The report includes suggestions on how to expand your choices and responses in conflict situations.

Note: There are no wrong or right answers and there is no one right way to address conflict. It is situation specific. If you want to expand your skills in addressing conflict, this workshop will offer you the opportunity to experiment with new responses in a safe learning environment.

The culture in which we grew up, the culture live in, our personality, and our role models on authority all play a part of how we address conflict and set boundaries.

In this experiential workshop we will:

  1. Learn about the five modes of Conflict in the Thomas Kilmann Conflict Model which has been used as part of leadership development since the 70s with decades of research on its reliability and validity.
  1. Rehearse and re-enact conflict or potential conflict situations. conflict and might have preferred to have done it differently. We will learn from and with each other. Each day we can make the choice to stretch beyond what is comfortable in order to expand our sense of who we are. As we commit to lifelong learning, we become our intention and practice. Where attention goes, energy follows.
  1. The workshop includes a goal-setting portion in which each participant can identify a goal and plan a course of action to enhance their response to conflict. In addition, participants can select a buddy to provide support in the process of achieving their goal.
  1. A somatic based mindfulness exercise will create a “relaxed effort” in pursuing our goal to feel more comfortable addressing potential conflict.

This workshop is for you if you would like to:

  • Be able to draw clearer boundaries and develop strategies for upholding them.
  • Be able to speak your mind calmly and kindly.
  • Be more confident and stand firm when a student pushes back, gets combative or is resistant to what you are asking them to do.
  • Feel okay with making a student uncomfortable or asking them to do something they don’t like.
  • Not be taken advantage of or mowed over by strong personalities (students, teachers, parents or anyone in your life).
  • Feel more confident when a client says “I don’t like that”, “I won’t do that”, “That’s not working for me”, “I can’t do that”, or “Can we move on?”

“Pushing the Edge: In-depth exploration of the Teaser, Long Stretch, and Rollover Families” – Part 2 (1pm – 4 pm)

advchairteaser

In the second part of our mentoring workshop we will explore three families of Pilates exercises that give teachers and students alike quite a bit of trouble: Teaser, Long Stretch (all things plank), and Rollover (all things inverted: rollover, corkscrew, jackknife, control balance, boomerang).

We will deconstruct each exercise into principles and pieces that you can easily achieve and teach to your students so that they not only succeed but progress.

During this workshop we will also be looking at how to move your students toward these exercises safely, exploring variations, modifications, contraindications, hands-on assists and spotting techniques that will optimize your experience and theirs.

Here’s what you can expect to take away from this workshop:

  • Learn how to determine which students are ready to venture into these advanced Pilates exercises using a simple check-list;
  • Discover how to integrate components of these more challenging and complex exercises into EVERY SESSION no matter what the students’ level;
  • Learn what’s really happening in these movements, what to strengthen, stretch, and organize given a particular challenge;
  • And how to integrate them into a session or class.
